My First Look at Big Thicket National Preserve

Today was my first day at Big Thicket National Preserve! I picked up my official badges and some paperwork at the Visitor's Center. (I'll have information and pictures of the Visitor's Center on a later date.) I also moved into the house where I will stay for the next four months.

We went on two brief walks at Big Thicket.

First up was the Kirby Nature Trail. At the beginning of the trail is Staley Cabin, an example of  the houses built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Then, we walked on the Inner Loop and Cypress Loop. This was an easy walk through the wetlands, with several bridges and boardwalks. Unfortunately, mosquitoes were in abundance, and our walk often became a jog.

Next was the wooden boardwalk on the Pitcher Plant Trail, home of the pale pitcher plant (Sarracenia alata). These carnivorous plants "eat" the insects that slide into their pitcher-like mouths. There were far fewer mosquitoes at this location.
