Traveling to Big Thicket, Day 2

We passed through 6 states on the second day of our trip.

Here are a few facts about each one:

  1. We departed from Kodak, Tennessee, which was legendarily named after the Kodak camera and film company by the town's postman. You can read more at the Sevier County, Tennessee website.
  2. The Ray Charles version of “Georgia on My Mind” is the official state song of Georgia, “The Peach State”.
  3. “Sweet Home” Alabama is called “The Yellowhammer State” after its state bird, Colaptes auratus, a migratory woodpecker.
  4. Mississippi is called both “The Magnolia State” for its official state tree, Magnolia grandiflora, and “The Hospitality State” for the welcoming demeanor of its residents.
  5. Although it has several nicknames, the official moniker of Louisiana is “The Pelican State” after its state bird, Pelecanus occidentalis or the brown pelican.
  6. Texas, “The Lone Star State”, is the 2nd largest state after Alaska.
