We passed through 6 states on the second day of our trip.
Here are a few facts about each one:
- We departed from Kodak, Tennessee, which was legendarily named after the Kodak camera and film company by the town's postman. You can read more at the Sevier County, Tennessee website.
- The Ray Charles version of “Georgia on My Mind” is the official state song of Georgia, “The Peach State”.
- “Sweet Home” Alabama is called “The Yellowhammer State” after its state bird, Colaptes auratus, a migratory woodpecker.
- Mississippi is called both “The Magnolia State” for its official state tree, Magnolia grandiflora, and “The Hospitality State” for the welcoming demeanor of its residents.
- Although it has several nicknames, the official moniker of Louisiana is “The Pelican State” after its state bird, Pelecanus occidentalis or the brown pelican.
- Texas, “The Lone Star State”, is the 2nd largest state after Alaska.
