Visiting the Fire Museum of Texas in Beaumont, TX

Continuing with my excursion on Tuesday, I visited the Fire Museum of Texas, home of the "World's Largest Functional Fire Hydrant". The museum is free of charge, with ample parking both in the lot beside the museum and across the street. Besides being a Texas Historical Landmark, the Central Fire Station houses multiple firetrucks, engines, and antique equipment. The informative displays also explain the chemistry behind old firefighting methods, along with describing where the trucks were built. For me, the most interesting section was about the "soda acid extinguisher", which combined water, baking soda, and acid to put out fires.

This museum took about a half hour to visit. It's geared towards people who like fire engines and old equipment more than families. The exhibit space is dimly lit in places. Small children should be watched carefully when visiting the museum, as there are multiple signs that remind visitors not to climb on the exhibit pieces. All in all, it was a fun experience, but not something I would go out of my way to visit.
