Today, I took part in the 8th Annual Neches River Rally. This event was hosted by the Big Thicket Association and took place on the Cooks Lake to Scatterman Paddling Trail near the Lower Neches Valley Authority Saltwater Barrier in Beaumont, Texas. This area is part of Big Thicket National Preserve, and the trail is marked by small, metal markers made by the park service. The trail is four miles long and took about three hours to complete at an easy pace. My favorite part of the trail was the cypress slough, where over a hundred cypress trees grow in shallow water. This trail is a must-see attraction for canoers, kayakers, and nature enthusiasts visiting southeast Texas.
